WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly Basketball standout Sardaar Calhoun has signed a national letter of intent to join the Florida State University Seminoles in fall 2020.

The 6-foot, 6-inch sophomore guard/forward from Tappahannock, Virginia, signed his paperwork today during a press conference at Hass-Darr Hall. Several teammates and Grizzly Booster Club members attended.

FSU is an NCAA Division I school in Tallahassee and competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“Sardaar has meant a great deal to our program,” Grizzly Basketball Head Coach Chris Popp said. “Obviously, he is a very talented basketball player and has a chance to leave here with his name all over our record books.

“But he also is an elite person and, overall, a fantastic individual. He has made an impact on our program, institution and community with his infectious smile and positive personality,” the coach added.

Calhoun has been one of the most highly recruited players in Grizzly Basketball history. He received numerous offers from NCAA Division I schools, including Seton Hall, North Carolina State University, Texas A&M University, University of Texas, University of Alabama and University of Georgia, to name a few.

Calhoun said he decided to play for FSU for several reasons. “I chose FSU because of the culture of winning and the players they have sent to the NBA from my position,” he explained. “I love the staff and players at FSU. They already treat me and my family like family. But the main thing is to win a national championship at FSU!”

Calhoun averaged 17.6 points, 5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game last season. He shot 48.2% from the field, 42.9% behind the arc and 66.2% from the charity stripe. His effectiveness on the court, especially against Region 16 opponents, earned him first team All-Region 16 honors last year.

Through five games this season, Calhoun averaged 23 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. He shot 46.7% from the field, 45.2% from behind the arc and 80% from the free throw line.

Calhoun is grateful that he decided to begin his collegiate career at Missouri State-West Plains. “I’m blessed to be a part of this university, not just for the athletics but the community as a whole. Here at Missouri State-West Plains, we are one big family. I thank God for shining light over Missouri State-West Plains and leading me here because being a Grizzly has taught me to be a better leader, brother and a stronger man of God.”

“It is an absolute pleasure to coach Sardaar,” Popp said. “I am grateful that he and his mother, Fontella, trusted us. On his visit, we talked about what was here for him and what it would take to get to where he wanted to go. The young man has worked, been all in and coachable. I am thankful that his work has paid off with this opportunity. The Seminoles are getting a great player and person. I look forward to watching him in the garnett and gold.”
