Two members of the Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) Grizzly Basketball team were selected to the NJCAA All-Region 16 team for the 2020-2021 season.

Sophomore point guard Martaveon Jones and freshman guard James “Scooter” Williams received first team All-Region 16 honors in recent balloting by region coaches.

“Both guys did a lot for us this year, and it is nice to see them rewarded with being named to the first team,” Grizzly Basketball Head Coach Jared Phay said.

Williams, from Clarksville, Tennessee, led the Grizzlies in scoring average this season with 16.3 points per game. He also recorded 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.

Jones, from Kansas City, averaged 12.4 points, 4.1 assists and 3.7 rebounds a game.

“Both guys are coming back next year, so we’re excited to see them build on what they did this year,” Phay said.

Williams also decided to sign scholarship paperwork this week indicating his intent to continue his playing career another season at MSU-WP.

“I think both guys know that this year didn’t end the way we wanted it to, and both guys texted me after our loss that they wanted to get back to work,” Phay said. “They’re already looking forward to next season.”

Mineral Area College’s (MAC) Malevy Leons was named the Region 16 Player of the Year and will be eligible for consideration for All-American honors.

Other first team All-Region 16 honorees included Keonte Jones, Terrion Murdix and Kevin Stone, all of MAC; Dezi Jones, Cortez Mosley and Sincere Parker, all of Moberly Area Community College; and Brahm Harris of Three Rivers College.

Second team honorees included Kevin Jones and Dominiques Hardimon, both of Three Rivers; Kohen Thompson and Jamar Madge, Jr., of State Fair Community College; and Tyren Moore of Moberly.

NJCAA officials granted waivers this year to allow sophomores the opportunity to come back to the junior college level for an extra year, and Jones took advantage of it, signing his scholarship paperwork earlier this week, Phay said.
