Phone Scams…again

The Publisher’s Clearing House Scammers are back at it again.  The Izard County Sheriff’s office has received several calls from residents about the call and we want to assure everyone that no one from the acclaimed sweepstakes headquarters is going to call you  saying you’ve won a million dollars but it will cost you $800 in processing fees to receive the million. Once again, if you are ever told you have to send money to claim a prize of any kind, it’s a scam. Scammers have also gotten clever in spoofing local numbers that you’d recognize as being local, so of course, you’re going to answer. Most of these calls are recorded even though they sound like they’re actually speaking with you.  The easy way to tell if its recorded is ask an off the wall question such as, ‘you have a nice voice, how many children do you have’?  If the caller is live on the other end, which would catch them off guard.  But if they just keep on talking, it’s likely a recording. Hang up.   Another thing to be VERY CAUTIOUS of is never say the word YES.  Many calls are recorded and that can be used as saying you agreed to something.  Even if they didn’t ask you if you agreed to something.  Some of the ways to get you say YES is by them simply asking if you’re the head of the household or are you having a good day.  These scammers are smart, but we’ve got to be smarter.
