
Thayer City Council met last night at City hall for their regular monthly meeting. There was a big crowd on hand with a lengthy agenda for the council to cover. The meeting began with a tax rate hearing. The Tax rate was set at 4.618. The council took care of regular business then began hearing from the people on the agenda. Ken Brown and Mr Moyer addressed the council about the future of the veteran memorial wall and after a discussion the council asked that they draw up some plans and bring it back to the council for them to vote on. Several other things were discussed during public participation including the city wide yard sale, renaming Tower Street to Belongy Drive, the closing of an alleyway, Anita Massic addressed the council about a wine manufacturing business on Front Street. Terry Floyd talked to the council about work on a culvert on his property done by the street department. all of theses items will have to be researched further for different reasons. Chief Daryl Childers told the council about a 100 percent grant for extenders and asked to purchase pillows and mattress’ for the jail, which the council agreed to. Fire Chief Mark Arnold talked to the council about a storm drain grant. Electric Supervisor Brian Blankenship talked about a new truck for the Electric Department, the council tabled this until the mayor talks to one of the bidders. Waste Water Treatment Supervisor Mike Alexander requested a tech repairman to work on the U.V system
at the plant. the council approved. Street commissioner Van Garrison talked about buying road salt in bulk at 97.50 per ton, the council agreed to buy two truck loads. City Clerk Chantelle Allison talked about attending the MML conference, the council agreed to send her. The council discussed the flower beds along the streets and agreed that they need to find volunteers to take care of them. The council discussed bids for surveillance system in city hall. Then Steve Banderman and Chris Grant from IBEW LOCAL 2 addressed the council about the union contract negotiations. The main concern was that they wanted a $1.50 an hour raise for city workers. the council discussed it with them for a while then agreed to talk about some more during closed session then come back in open session and discuss again. The Council came back after closed session and told them that would be willing to sign the original agreement without the raise or they could re-negotiate the contract. Banderman and Grant said they would have to talk to the guys in the Union and then let the council know what they decided.
