2 Local Schools Voted On Millage Increases Tuesday

Two area school districts went to the polls on Tuesday to vote on millage increases. The Lawrence County School District voted 366 yes and 359 no If the millage increase of 2.9 mills passes, the money would go toward building a new gym, baseball and softball fields, as well as a safe room on the school’s campus. Superintendent Terry Belcher said the projects would total around $8.5 million dollars. Voters in the Pocahontas School District passed a millage increase on Tuesday with 723 voting for it and 286 voting against it.  The 3.44 mills increase will help build a new elementary building for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Administrators said construction on the new building could begin as soon as this fall. The project is scheduled to be completed by the 2020 school year.
