A new program in Douglas County is helping the elderly, disabled or low-income stay warm this winter, all while saving them a few bucks. The Wood for Warmth program is a partnership between the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Master Dream USA saw mill in Ava. People who meet certain criteria can get a voucher for one free truck load of firewood at the mill. No trailers are allowed to pick up the wood and once you get the wood you are not allowed to sell it. Also, anyone meeting the criteria but that is under investigation by the local law enforcement will not be given a voucher. Folks can stop by the sheriff’s office to pick up a voucher Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 4:45 and on Fridays from 7 to 11 am. Volunteers are needed to help cut the wood as well as deliver the wood to homes in the area. If you would like to help, contact the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office or Kevin McDaniel at Master Dream USA saw mill at 417-543-2697
