As Tuesday turned to Wednesday at Chase Field, the Cardinals and D-backs continued to play. And play. And play.

After 19 innings, it was the D-backs who came out on top.

The Cardinals lost, 3-2, when Ildemaro Vargas knocked a two-out RBI single off reliever John Brebbia. St. Louis’ magic number to clinch the National League Central remained at three.

Paul Goldschmidt homered for the second straight night, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead in the 13th inning, but the D-backs tied it back up in the bottom of the frame on a Caleb Joseph RBI single.
