Rate Of Uninsured Kids In Arkansas Is Rising

After almost a decade of steady improvement, the number of children without health insurance in Arkansas and across the U-S is on the rise again, a new report shows. The study, released this week by the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, finds that nationally, the rate of uninsured children increased from 4-point-seven percent to 5-point-two percent between 2016 and 2018. The numbers were also higher in Arkansas, where the rate expanded from 4 percent to 4-point-five percent. Loretta Alexander with Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families says while the rate in Arkansas is just a moderate increase, there is still room for improvement.

The Georgetown report identified multiple causes for the downturn, including efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, delays in funding the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and confusing regulations in the state’s Medicaid program.
