Destructive feral hogs that cause billions in damage nationwide were the subject of a presentation in the Missouri House Wednesday morning. Dale Nolte, the program manager for the USDA’s feral swine program and Texas Wildlife director Mike Bodenchuck spoke during the presentation. Feral hogs cause around $2.5 billion in damages per year nationwide and the animals have spread to 40 states –including Missouri. Bodenchuck says the hog population grew slowly at first in his state, but “exploded” years later –referring to the phenomenon as a “pig bomb”

Nolte says part of the problem, is that the hogs breed rapidly and can adjust to almost any habitat. But he says Missouri is taking the right steps to eventually remove them. Currently, the federal government gives about $750,000 to support Missouri’s removal efforts.
