A Petition Is Circulating To Get Rid Of Highland Rebel Mascot

Residents in the Highland School District are considering a pair of petitions concerning the schools mascot that are circulating on social media. One petition is to keep the Rebel Mascot the other is to get rid of it. The School open in 1964 and the Rebel Mascot was selected by the students, faculty and administration at that time. Around the country many groups and organizations have looked to change names of mascots because they feel they are racially offensive. One petition says the Rebel name symbolizes the Confederacy. Organizers of the other petition say its not about race but about school pride. The school said they are aware of the petitions but have not been approached by either group so far.
