SIKESTON – The historic Route 142 bridge over the Eleven Point River in Oregon County is available for relocation and reuse by others. Any interested party is encouraged to submit a proposal no later than Dec. 31, 2021, to the Missouri Department of Transportation Historic Preservation Section to obtain the structure.
Slated for replacement, this bridge can be obtained by government entities, historical or civic groups, or private citizens, free of charge. Details about the bridge can be viewed online at www.modot.org/freebridges. Anyone interested in obtaining a historic bridge must submit a detailed proposal describing the dismantling and relocation plan, cost, and future use. A proposal checklist is available online.
The Route 142 bridge was constructed in 1957. It is a 10-panel, Warren polygonal all verticals pony truss with a 48-foot flange girder approach span on the north end and two 65-foot flange girder approach spans on the south end. The bridge has a total length of 304 feet and a 20-foot roadway. The bridge has concrete abutments with wing walls, concrete pile bents, and concrete piers with web walls. The bridge has a 12-foot channel railing. The structure is located 1.5 miles southeast of Bilmore, Missouri.
The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act had not yet been passed when the bridge was constructed, but the scenic quality of the area was already recognized. When the Act was passed, Eleven Point was one of the original rivers. This bridge is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
