Missouri Governor requiring online businesses to charge sales tax

Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed a bill into law on Wednesday that will require out-of-state online stores to charge sales tax on purchases made by Missouri residents.

Missouri is the last state with a sales tax to approve a requirement such as this.

Supporters of the bill say the new law will help level the playing field with local Missouri stores that are required to charge sales tax, while some out-of-state online sellers have avoided charging the tax.

The law will require all out-of-state retailers that make at least $100,000 in sales every year to collect local and state taxes beginning in 2023.
