Last night, the Thayer City Council held their monthly meeting, and also held a town hall before that meeting.

Around 30 people were in attendance, and everyone was given the opportunity to speak about different ways they thought the City of Thayer could expand.

Multiple city and state leaders were in attendance, including a representative from SCOCOG, a representative from the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Representatives Ron Copeland and David Evans, Oregon County Presiding Commissioner David Stubblefield, and many others.

MDEC said that they were working closely with SCOCOG for grants that will be available, and include maybe a enterprise zone for the city.

A major part of the development of the industrial park will include widening Holmes Road or finding another way to access the park.

I spoke to Presiding Commissioner David Stubblefield, and he tells me that he plans to work with MODOT and see what options can be placed on the table.

I also had a chance to speak with Representative Ron Copeland about the expansion, and he said he will help wherever he can.

One of Representative Copeland’s campaign promises was to help the poverty level in the counties that he represents and thinks economic development coming to the area is essential to be changing that.

Another note at the meeting was that a major portion of Southern Missouri’s population majorly decreased in this year’s census.

Many officials at last night’s meeting were not in support of the final numbers.
