IZARD COUNTY, AR (ECNN) – The Izard County Sheriff’s Office announced they have been awarded more than $700,000 in grants for the past two years.

According to Chief Deputy Charley Melton, two grants were given for comprehensive opioid abuse prevention.

The grant was able to help Izard County hire two officers who investigated and addressed the opioid crisis.

Two other officers were also hired to help those addicted to drugs.

Melton also says the opioid grants helped in the arrest of 36 people in June that were selling or dealing drugs within the county.

Within ten months of receiving the grants, the IZSD was able to help place nearly 70 people into rehabilitation programs.

The grants were funded by the Public Safety Equipment fund and appropriated $500,000 for public safety equipment considered non-lethal.
