Missouri legislation could drastically alter state’s self-defense laws

Legislation that would drastically alter Missouri’s self-defense laws was debated by a Senate committee today. 

Senator Eric Burlison’s bill would remove the requirement for someone to prove they used physical or deadly force in self-defense. 

If passed, the bill would move the burden onto the prosecutor to prove the defendant’s actions were not in self-defense. 

Until then, the defendant cannot be arrested or detained. President of Missouri’s NAACP, Rod Chapel, spoke against the bill. He said it would hurt people of all backgrounds. 

Chapel went on to say that the bill would essentially legalize murder.
