Missouri house bill 2113 proposes several changes to Missouri’s election process, including requiring photo ID and updating voter rolls. The bill would also revoke state funding for any local election authorities who fail to comply with new regulations. Proponents say the changes are necessary to prevent voter fraud. According to New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice, 34 restrictive voting laws were passed in 19 states last year. Denise Lieberman serves as general counsel for the Missouri Voter Protection Coalition and faculty director of Voter Access & Engagement at Washington University. She says that this national trend began in 2008 with the introduction of photo ID laws in a wide range of states.
The next House Bill 2113 hearing is scheduled for this Wednesday.
