The City of Van Buren in Carter County has issued a boil water advisory for their customers.
The boil water advisory was issued due to the presence of E. coli in two routine water samples collection on Feb. 22.
E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes.
Repeat samples of the water are being taken to verify the presence or absence of the bacteria in the water.
While the city waits for the return of the samples, the boil water advisory will remain in effect.
Those wanting to use the water are advised to boil water vigorously for three minutes before use but let it cool sufficiently before drinking.
If water cannot be boiled, use an alternative source such as bottled water.
Do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker or use any ice made with unboiled water.
Finally, the city says to disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
