Missouri House Committee discusses bill requiring violent offender registry

The Missouri House Committee on Crime Prevention discussed a bill yesterday (MONDAY) that would require the State Highway Patrol to create a registry for people who commit first or second-degree murder and are released on parole or placed on probation. People who successfully complete their parole or probation would then be removed from the list. The registry would include people who committed crimes in Missouri as well as any other state. Also included would be people who plead not guilty by reason of insanity. Representative Rasheen Aldridge of Saint Louis says that while he does not necessarily oppose the bill, he does have some concerns.

Last year 88 people with murder convictions were released from prison in Missouri, according to the bill’s fiscal note. Similar legislation has passed in several other states, including Kansas and Oklahoma.
