On Wednesday, the Missouri House gave first-round approval to a bill that would create a nursery for incarcerated mothers. Through this program women who give birth while incarcerated would have the chance to stay with their newborns in prison for up to 18 months. Bill sponsor RepresentativeBruce DeGroot said the program would pay for itself, help Missouri’s kids, and is what’s best for mothers. The proposal has bipartisan support and Democratic Representative Rachyel Proudie said at any cost, it’s the right thing to do.
Prison nurseries have been created in 9 other states and are shown to improve outcomes for both the mother and child and reduce recidivism.
