The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has announced it is joining with law enforcement statewide for a high visibility youth seat belt mobilization to increase seat belt use among teens and reduce highway fatalities.
According to a social media post, the program began on Tuesday and runs until March 31.
Additional law enforcement will be watching for those without seat belts.
Only 75.5 % of Missouri teens wear their seat belts when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Seven out of ten teen vehicle drivers and passengers killed in traffic crashes are unbuckled.
Under the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) law, teens must wear their seat belts as it’s a primary offense, meaning they can be pulled over solely for not wearing their seat belts. Local motorists should be prepared for stepped-up seat belt enforcement. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will be out there to remind you seat belts can – and do – save lives.
This is made possible by a grant received from the National Highway Safety Administration to pay the Deputies overtime during this enforcement period.
