Missouri House members begin effort to pass 2023 budget

House members began their efforts today to pass their version of a 2023 budget. Time is tight, because it still must go to the Senate and they have an early May deadline. The house reviewed Governor Mike Parson’s record $47.3 billion state budget, including $1.8 billion in surplus money, and debated how to spend that money. Allocating surplus money toward Elementary and Secondary Education is one point of focus for some lawmakers. Democratic Representative Maggie Nurrenbern (NUR-ren-burn), of Clay County, says she wants to increase funding for school transportation in the coming year. She spoke with Missouri News Network earlier this morning before the House convened.

Representative Nurrenbern’s proposed a transportation funding amendment to add about $50 million but it failed by a vote of 43 to 83. Before the vote, Budget Committee Chair Cody Smith spoke against the amendment, saying it called for too much money.
