Missouri House Committee debates bill allowing convicted felons to run for public office

House committee members debated a bill that would allow convicted felons to run for public office. According to HB2301, felons would have to wait until seven years had passed since their convictions to run for office. One supporter, Jeff Smith of Missouri Appleseed and Missouri ACLU, who was formerly incarcerated, expressed how, if passed, this bill would allow convicted felons to get back on their feet and represent their districts.

Democratic Representative Kevin Windham said former offenders that run should have to disclose what their felony was.
