Elementary students across Missouri could be catching up on their reading skills as soon as day one of 2023.
Senator Cindy O’Laughlin of Shelbina presented a bill Tuesday that she says will provide kindergarten through fifth-grade students with an -quote-“evidence-based” plan that would address students’ reading deficiencies. Under the bill, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education would develop reading goals for students based on their reading test scores at the beginning of the school year.
It would also address the cost of teacher training and materials by creating a fund under the State Treasury. The fund would be used to reimburse schools that need the money to implement the reading program. Three teacher organizations spoke in favor of the bill. No one spoke against it.
