Man accused of shooting a deputy and a trooper in Carter County is found guilty

A man accused of shooting a Carter County deputy and an MSHP trooper in August of 2019 was in court on Friday. James D. Cummings was found guilty of four counts of first-degree assault and four counts of armed criminal action.  Cummings shot Carter County Deputy Brigg Pierson and MSHP trooper Caleb McCoy when they tried to remove him from his home.  Cummings opened fire when they kicked in his front door hitting Pierson three times and McCoy once.  After a seven-hour standoff, Cummings walked out of the home with his hands up and surrendered. The trial was held in Jefferson County. Cummings is scheduled to be sentenced on September 22.
