Ozark County Sheriff has to lay off several employees

There will now be fewer deputies in Ozark County. Sheriff Cass Martin said in a press release on Wednesday that his office was left with no other choice, other than to lay off deputies because of the increased expenses related to inflation and sales tax revenue expected to come in far below what they had anticipated. The Sheriff said they had been working with the county commission to find ways to overcome the deficit, but were left with no other option but to lay off staff to meet his budgetary obligations. Sheriff Martin said he has had to lay off two full-time deputies and 5 other employees.  In July ECNN reported that the Sheriff issued an emergency order that deputies would no longer seek traffic violations. He said they would only answer calls for violent misdemeanor crimes and felony crimes.  The Sheriff’s Office gets only half of a cent per dollar from the local sales tax of 2.5%. No other tax revenue is collected.
