WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Fans, friends, and current and former members of the Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) Grizzly Volleyball team are invited to celebrate the accomplishments of long-time head coach Paula Wiedemann at a special event Feb. 17 at the West Plains Civic Center.

University officials announced in December that Wiedemann was stepping down from the program and retiring from the university after 26 seasons with the team – the last 14 as its head coach.

Members of the Grizzly Booster Club Executive Board of Directors are hosting the event from 6 to 8 p.m. Those attending will enjoy a meal while hearing from administrators; former assistant coaches and players; current players; and other special guests, including representatives from the NJCAA, AVCA, Region 16 and fellow coaches, organizers said.

“On behalf of all current and previous Grizzly Booster Club members, we want to say a big thank you to Coach Paula for her leadership of the volleyball program and the great job she’s done mentoring players and representing MSU-WP in our community,” said Sonny Smith, Grizzly Booster Club board president. “We are proud of her and consider it a privilege to be able to honor her with this event and show her our gratitude.”

“Paula has cemented a special place in Grizzly Athletics at MSU-WP,” said Russ Gant, a long-time Grizzly fan and volunteer for the NJCAA Division I Women’s National Volleyball Championship Tournament in West Plains. “She has developed NJCAA and AVCA All-Americans who have both athletic and academic prowess, and she has earned the respect and admiration of her peers at all levels of competitive collegiate volleyball. She has earned this special night of recognition.”

Alumni who cannot attend the Feb. 17 event are welcome to submit congratulatory videos to WPAdvancement@MissouriState.edu, organizers said.

There is no cost to attend the celebration, but those who would like to come and celebrate Wiedemann and wish her well on her retirement are encouraged to RSVP to WPAdvancement@MissouriState.edu or call 417-255-7240.

“We would love to see hundreds in attendance to show Paula how much she means to our community and our campus,” MSU-WP Athletic Director Rusty Laverentz said. “Please join us in celebrating the career of a legend.”
