This week is groundwater awareness week in Arkansas

While most people don’t often stop to consider what goes on underground, this is groundwater awareness week and officials are encouraging Missourians to take notice. Missouri has over 400-thousand private drinking wells serving more than a quarter of the state’s population. Most of the private drinking wells in the state are located south of the Missouri river. Officials encourage people to test their well water every year for common contaminants. Jeff Wenzel heads the state Bureau of Environmental Epidemiology and says there are additional reasons to test your well water outside of that timeframe.

The Missouri State Public Health Laboratory tests private drinking water for both bacteria and chemical contamination. Test kits are available from your local public health agency. For more info visit the Private Drinking Water page on the Missouri Department of Health website at health.mo.gov under Healthy Living.
