
Jared Phay, head coach of the Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) Grizzly Basketball team, has announced two more signings for the upcoming season.
Javian Downey, a 6-foot, 2-inch combo guard from Toronto, Canada, and Kamari Vinson, a 6-foot, 4-inch wing from Newport News, Virginia, have signed national letters of intent to play for the Grizzlies beginning with the in 2023-2024 season.
Downey averaged 15 points, seven assists and 4.5 rebounds per game while starring at J Addison Prep in Canada. He also earned academic standout recognition. He played for Coach Juveol Myles and led J Addison to a 21-5 overall record in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA), which is the premier prep school league in Canada.
“Javian is an athletic guard who can score it but also run the show,” Phay said. “He is an above-the-rim guy who has a great feel for the game and has the size to be a great defender.”
Vinson, a versatile wing who can play multiple positions, starred at Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News for Coach Trevor Dorsey. Vinson led the team to consecutive 25-plus win seasons and back-to-back state tournament appearances. He averaged 12 points and nine rebounds per game this past season.
In a unique twist, Vinson will be joining current Grizzly Kendon Peebles, whom he competed against in previous seasons at the high school level.
“Kamari is very athletic and can guard and play multiple positions,” Phay said. “He will be a great rebounder from the guard position, as well as a great defender.”
