Consumer scams are on the rise, especially online, and A-A-R-P Arkansas is warning residents with tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft. In the latest A-A-R-P survey of one-thousand adults, about half said they believe that older people are victimized by scams more often than younger ones. Seth Boffeli with A-A-R-P Arkansas says those who steal identities through mail or email often use the information to get credit cards and set up bank accounts. He adds the spike began during the pandemic when criminals were looking for ways to get P-P-P loans and tap into other sources of government money.

Boffeli recommends setting up credit monitoring, which can alert you if a new account has been opened in your name. He adds the three credit bureaus offer people a free credit report yearly, and it’s worth looking at, to make sure there are no accounts that you didn’t apply for. He also suggests placing a credit freeze on your report with each of the three major credit bureaus.
