Shannon County first Responders get $6,000 grant

The Shannon County First Responders (SCFR) have received a generous grant from the non-profit Jacks Fork Community Foundation. The six thousand dollar grant will enable the First Responders to purchase additional radios and three Automated  External Defibrillators or “AEDs.” These are the famous devices that use electricity to jolt a patient’s heart back into a healthy rhythm.

Currently, in an emergency, the First Responders have to go to a central location and pick up the AED, as the organization only has one per town. These three new AEDs will be carried in the vehicles of some of the responders, making it more likely that a device will be nearby when needed. This will make the response time to cardiac emergencies much quicker, which is vital.

“Thanks to the Jacks Fork Community Foundation we will be better able to serve the community and may very well save lives because these AEDs can get to the scene faster,” said SCFR president Allen Ford. “We would also like to thank our Medical Director Dr Jon Roberts,” added SCFR spokesperson Bill O’Donnell, “his tireless advocacy is responsible for helping us get this and other donations.”

“The Jacks Fork Community Foundation is an affiliate of Community Foundation of the Ozarks. It was formed to promote and support educational, literary, recreational, civic, benevolent and cultural activities in the Mountain View, Birch Tree, Winona, Eminence, Summersville, and surrounding area,” explained JFCF President Charles Cantrell, “ We are committed to working with groups to benefit the area and assist in sustaining it as a vibrant community within which to live, work, and learn.”

The Shannon County First Responders are an all volunteer organization funded entirely by grants and donations. Their purpose is to serve the community by arriving before the ambulance and providing life sustaining care until EMS arrives. They have a Facebook page where you can find more information.
