
On July 16th, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received information that there was a female walking down the road, in the Plainview area of West 76, partially clothed. Deputy Joe Dering responded and located the female walking down the road. Deputy Dering advised the female to stop, but she continued backing away from Deputy Dering. At different points the female would advance towards Deputy Dering and then back away towards the heavy flow of traffic. 26-year-old Courtney Duck was arrested and witnesses advised she had gotten out of a vehicle and tossed the syringe into the ditch. Deputy Dering located the syringe, which did not have a needle, and field tested positive for methamphetamine. Duck was transported to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class D Felony), Resisting/Interfering with Arrest, Detention, Stop (Class A Misdemeanor), and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Class D Misdemeanor)
The bond is set at $1500-00 cash

On July 24th, 2023; Corporal Nelson responded to the Douglas County Jail for a fight in the jail. A female inmate was observed with a swollen lip and redness near her left eye. Another inmate, 32-year-old Courtney Melton, of Clever, MO was observed to have a bleeding finger. Ms. Melton advised that the other inmate had bitten her. EMS checked both inmates.
Corporal Nelson reviewed the footage, showing both inmates talking on the phone. The other inmate had attempted to Ms. Melton from viewing her punch in her pin number but did not touch Ms. Melton. Ms. Melton pushed the other inmate, hit her on the face with a phone, and slammed her head into the wall. Ms. Melton pushed the other inmate to the floor and continued punching her in the face and head.
Another female inmate, 20-year-old Kirsten Johnson, of Ava, held the victim’s leg to prevent her from protecting herself and was continually encouraging Ms. Melton to continue the fight. Ms. Johnson was continually grabbing the inmate’s arms and legs to prevent her from fighting back. Jail staff were able to diffuse the fight.

Melton is charged with Domestic Assault 1st Degree (Class B Felony)
The bond is set at $1500 cash only
