Congress passed a one-year extension of the current Farm Bill, which means the debate over a new bill will continue well into 2024. Advocacy groups say they’ll be using this time to push for bold policy changes – that include an end to subsidizing factory farm manure management and taking steps to restore competition in livestock markets, so independent producers can stay in business. Darvin Betlage, who raises cattle in Missouri, says when it comes to waste, it’s more than just the odor that communities are left with.
Betlage and family-farming advocates would also like to see mandatory country-of-origin labeling to better inform consumers about their purchases. The Farm Bill officially expired in September, but Congress hasn’t taken the necessary steps to pass a new one.
