On January 4, 2024 Steven Michael Konert age 44 of Ava, was arrested by Federal Authorities at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and taken into Federal custody in connection to the Child Pornography case worked by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Ava Police Department and Cyber Crimes Task Force.
Konert was being held in the Douglas County Jail on a Douglas County warrant for 2 counts of possession of child pornography.
The arrest warrant was issued by the Western District of Missouri United States District Court for knowingly receiving and distributing any visual depictions that had been mailed or shipped and transported in interstate commerce, and which contained materials that had been so mailed and shipped and transported by any means including computer, the production of which involved the use of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct and which visual depiction was of such conduct, all in violation of Title 18, US Code Sections 2252(a) and(b).
Sheriff Degase advised Konert now faces Federal Prosecution and would like to thank the Ava Police Department and the Cybercrimes task force for their assistance in this case.
On December 31, 2023, at approximately 1400 hours the Deputy A. Box took a report of a stolen side by side in Western Douglas County near the Christian County line. A family member encountered the suspect on adjacent property where he confronted the individual about trespassing and as the suspect drove off the family member recognized the UTV as belonging to a nearby family member.
As Deputy Box was conducting the investigation, Douglas County Dispatch advised Deputy Box that off duty Deputy Shawn Wilson had the subject in custody and had recovered the stolen UTV. The suspect was identified as Jason David Smith age 46 of Bruner.
Deputy Wilson advised that he was at his residence when Smith pulled up to Deputy Wilsons residence stating he needed air for a tire that was low on the stolen UTV. Smith was surprised when he was taken into custody by off duty Deputy Shawn Wilson.
The side by side was returned to its rightful owner undamaged.
A warrant was obtained for Smith for Stealing of a motor vehicle with bond being set at $5000 cash only. Smith is currently incarcerated in the Douglas County Jail.
