ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals and outfielder Dylan Carlson agreed to a $2.35 million contract Thursday to avoid arbitration, though the club could not reach a deal with versatile Tommy Edman and will exchange salary figures with him.
The 25-year-old Carlson has long been considered one of the Cardinals’ top young players, but he is coming off a disappointing and injury-filled season in which he hit just .219 with five homers and 27 RBIs. The club still views him as an important piece of their future, though, and he will find time in the outfield behind Edman, Jordan Walker and Lars Nootbar.
His salary was a big increase from the $742,400 that Carlson made last season.
Edman, a Gold Glove finalist as a utility player the past two seasons, has been recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist in October. He missed three weeks last season with inflammation in the wrist, and it may have contributed to a downtick in his production at the plate, where he hit .248 with 13 homers and 47 RBIs in 137 games.
The 28-year-old Edman made $4.2 million last season.
The Cardinals also announced they had avoided salary arbitration with pitchers Ryan Helsley John King, Andrew Kittredge and JoJo Romero.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals and right-hander Brady Singer agreed to a $4.85 million, one-year contract Thursday, and fellow pitchers Nick Anderson, Carlos Hernández and Kyle Wright also agreed to deals that kept Kansas City from going to arbitration this year.
Singer got a big bump from the $2.95 million he made last season, even though the 27-year-old former first-round draft pick had a disappointing year. He went 8-11 in 29 starts with a 5.52 ERA that was nearly 2 1/2 runs higher than the previous season.
Anderson, who was acquired from Atlanta to help fortify the bullpen, agreed to a $1,575,000 deal. He was 4-0 with a 3.06 ERA and one save in 35 appearances for the Braves, who romped to the NL East title but lost in the NL Divisional Series.
Hernández agreed to a $1,012,500 contract after going 1-10 with a 5.27 ERA last season for Kansas City.
Wright is not expected to pitch in 2024 but will make $1.8 million as he rehabs from shoulder surgery last October. The Royals also acquired the former 20-game winner from Atlanta in a trade for right-hander Jackson Kowar.
