The Kansas City Chiefs team physician accused of hitting and killing a teenager injured in a collision and the Good Samaritan who stopped to help pled guilty in order to pay a $2000 fine.

On Friday, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said Doctor Michael Monaco, team physician for the Chiefs, pled guilty to that misdemeanor traffic violation. Court records indicate that around 2:00 AM November 6th, 2023, law enforcement officials were called to the area of I-70 in Lee’s Summit Rd. With reports of a rollover collision. 50-year-old Robert Piper of Blue Springs had stopped to help. When first responders arrived, they said they found a 15-year-old unlicensed driver who was found to be under the influence of marijuana, lost control of the vehicle which had rolled on to the top. The vehicle was also found to have been reported stolen. Piper had stopped to render lifesaving aid to another miner in the car. First responders noted that both Piper and the juvenile died. After they were hit by another vehicle for six months, the Piper family said they wondered why Doctor Monaco never stepped up to the scene despite his medical background. They finally got their answer in court, but for them, justice isn’t good enough. He pled guilty to careless and imprudent driving, ordered to pay a $2000 fine. No evidence revealed that he had been impaired at the time of the crash.
