A West Plains man wanted for active warrants was arrested after the Howell County S.W.A.T. unit was called to a home in Pomona. 41-year-old Christopher Smith was found hiding in the furnace of the house. Smith is charged with felony resisting arrest for a felony and possession of a controlled substance. The S.W.A.T. team was placed on standby due to the suspect’s history of resisting arrest and the knowledge that he was usually armed with a gun. After law enforcement arrived, several announcements were made verbally that the suspect was under arrest, but after he didn’t leave the home, the S.W.A.T. team moved in. A flash-bang device was deployed in the living room but prompted no response. A powder gas meant to irritate was then deployed into the home and directly into a closet area where the suspect was thought to be hiding but continued to resist until law enforcement entered and found him after removing the front panel of a furnace located in the closet. A bag of a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine was allegedly found on Smith.
