On August 26, 2024, at approximately 1:26 PM, Howell County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Hambelton observed a Blue 1995 Ford F-150 truck driven by James Allen Peterson Jr., fail to yield to the West Plains Police Department.
A pursuit ensued, and James Allen Peterson, Jr. continued traveling northbound on Rhonda Dr. until he took a left on Quarry RD/County Road 4300 to flee. Mr. Peterson continued traveling westbound down County Road 4300 at a high rate of speed swerving from ditch to ditch, almost running another vehicle off of the road.
Mr. Peterson continued driving down County Road 4950 until he came to the intersection of County Road 4950 and County Road 4420. As another Howell County Deputy joined the pursuit, Deputy Hambelton maneuvered his vehicle in front of Mr. Peterson’s vehicle to stop the fleeing car by applying his patrol car brakes. As Deputy Hambelton attempted to slow the pursuit, Mr. Peterson began swerving from ditch to ditch to pass the patrol vehicle. Deputy Hambelton continued to block Mr. Peterson from his passing attempts, so Mr. Peterson turned right and drove through a fence and onto a field where his vehicle slowed and he was finally apprehended. Deputy Hambleton’s patrol vehicle sustained windshield and front-end damage as a result of the pursuit.
Deputies searched Mr. Peterson’s vehicle after he was taken into custody, and numerous baggies, a glass smoking device, and weighing scales containing a white crystal-like substance were located inside. The residue tested positive for methamphetamine. All items were seized and placed into evidence.
James Allen Peterson Jr. age, 32, was placed into custody and transported to the Howell County Adult Detention where he was booked on several outstanding warrants from the Howell County Sheriff’s Office for Assault 3rd Degree, Domestic Assault 3rd Degree, and two counts of Endangering the welfare of a child.
A report will be sent to the Howell County Prosecutor’s Office for review of the current pending charges.
