West Plains Police report the arrest of man after 45 minute standoff

On September 13, 2024, at approximately 11:01 PM, officers with the West Plains Police Department and assisting deputies with the Howell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a suicidal male subject at a residence in the 600 block of 1st Street, West Plains, Missouri, 65775.

Upon arrival at the scene law enforcement officers encountered a male subject in the front yard of the residence who was brandishing a fixed blade knife with a blade length of approximately five inches and appeared to be angry, emotional, and intoxicated. The male subject expressed his intent to force law enforcement officers to kill him by brandishing the weapon in an angry or threatening manner.

Officers on scene began crisis negotiation techniques with the male subject for a period of approximately forty-five minutes and through those continued efforts were ultimately able to take the male into custody without force being utilized or harm to the male subject or law enforcement officers on scene.

The male was later transported without incident to the Ozark’s Healthcare Emergency Room for treatment.
