Every state, including Missouri, has 10 years to replace active water lines that contain traces of lead. The Biden Administration has issued a final Environmental Protection Agency rule to remove all traces of lead from active water lines throughout the United States. The rule states that the work must be completed within the next 10 years. With this mandate now in place, Missouri received $40.5 million, along with an additional $35 million through competitive grants.
According to data recently compiled by the Natural Resources Defense Council, there are approximately 162,386 water lines with traces of lead, half of which are located in St. Louis or St. Charles County. For smaller towns across the state, the number of lead water pipes is low, according to the NRDC. However, in larger cities such as St. Louis and Kansas City, there is a higher likelihood of having traces of lead in their water lines.
