The Missouri State University governing board called an emergency meeting Friday afternoon after they received word that a federal lawsuit had been filed involving their new president, Richard “Biff” Williams. The suit alleges Williams perpetrated a vulgar prank against a Utah Tech colleague and then blamed three other officials, including two women, for contributing to a hostile work environment. The Missouri State Board of Governors released a statement on Monday.
“The Board of Governors of Missouri State University is aware of the pending lawsuit and has confidence in President Williams’ ability to lead Missouri State University. We are committed to working alongside him to ensure that the university is a safe and welcoming environment to all students, faculty, and staff.”
In the lawsuit filed Thursday, Williams was accused of leaving a display of vegetables arranged in a “sexual and obscene” manner on the front porch of a Utah State official who was recovering from a vasectomy.
Williams left a note at the scene referring to the long zucchini as a “zuweenie” but instead of signing his own name, he signed the name of three of their colleagues. Rebecca Broadbent, Hazel Sainsbury, and Jared Rasband filed the suit. The three, who all played a role in enforcing Title IX laws and policies, said they were not aware of or part of the apparent practical joke.
Williams sent a message to the campus Saturday morning. In it, he referred to the “zuweenie” incident as a mistake, a prank, and a “lapse in judgment.”
