The Missouri House Utilities Committee advanced a bill Monday to allow water, gas, and electric utilities to seek rate increases based on estimated future expenses and for unfinished power plant construction. William Wallace is the Executive Director and President of Missouri Veterans Endeavor, an organization that assists homeless veterans. He says the bill would raise rates for his already struggling clients.

He cited estimates that found that the average household’s utility bill would increase by more than 11 hundred dollars annually. Supporters of the bill say the increase would not be that high, and that customers will eventually see benefits after paying the upfront costs. The state Public Service Commission would continue to provide authorization for rate increases.
