
BATESVILLE, Arkansas — Lyon College will continue its 2025 Convocation speaker series with a presentation on economic growth and inequality across nations by Dr. Quamrul H. Ashraf, Halvorsen Professor for Distinguished Teaching and Research of Economics at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on Thursday, March 20, at 4 p.m. in Nucor Auditorium, located in the Lyon Business and Economics Building, 2300 Highland Rd., Batesville.
This event is free and open to the public.
Drawing from his recently published textbook, “Economic Growth,” Dr. Ashraf’s talk will explore the key concepts and theories behind economic inequality between nations. He will discuss factors that affect a country’s economic growth, such as capital accumulation, population trends, education, technology and globalization. Dr. Ashraf will also look at deeper, long-term influences, including institutions, governance, culture and geography, shaped by historical events like colonialism and mass migrations.
A recognized expert in economics, Dr. Ashraf earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Computer Science from Trinity College in 1999 and a Ph.D. in Economics from Brown University in 2009. His research focuses on the cultural, institutional and geographical factors that influence economic growth and political economies. He serves as an associate editor at the Journal of Economic Growth and the Journal of Population Economics. He is a recipient of the Nelson Bushnell Prize, which is awarded by Williams College to faculty who are consistently recognized by their colleagues and students as excellent teachers and mentors.
