Scam Alert

The Howell County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to beware of people impersonating Federal Emergency Management Agency officials, or FEMA.

Scammers like this travel to disaster areas, hoping to steal money from innocent victims.

The majority of complaints coming into FEMA involve bogus charities, FEMA impersonators, fake websites masquerading as FEMA, electricity disconnection threats, and contractor fraud.

FEMA employees have clearly labeled identification badges.

Members of the public who encounter such individuals should see their properly labeled identification. If verification is needed, please call the Howell County Sheriff’s Office at 417-256-2544.

As of today, FEMA employees are not in the area.

If you believe a FEMA Impersonator is in your area, or that you have been a victim of fraud, contact the Howell County Sheriff’s office at 417-256-2544.

You may also report fraud by calling the National Center for Disaster Fraud’s hotline at 866-720-5721.
