A warrant has been issued in Oregon County for the arrest of a former ambulance district director accused of embezzling nearly thirty thousand dollars from a fund meant to support first responders. Kenneth A. McKenzie, who resigned from his position with the Oregon County Ambulance District in October of 2024, is charged with stealing nearly thirty thousand dollars. Investigators say McKenzie made a dozen unauthorized ATM withdrawals between January and October of 2024, totaling more than twenty-eight thousand dollars, from a donation-based Community First Banking account set up to assist emergency responders. The investigation began when McKenzie allegedly instructed the board’s office secretary to shred financial documents before a trip. Suspicious, the secretary alerted the board president, who reviewed the bank statement and uncovered fifty-three withdrawals. Most of the transactions were five hundred dollars each, and only McKenzie had access to the account and the debit card. No receipts or board approvals were found. Investigators also discovered McKenzie had a romantic relationship with a co-worker who received expensive gifts and payments towards credit card debt. Surveillance footage showed later that McKenzie withdrew cash from a Thayer Bank just days before his resignation. He has since relocated to Texas and declined to meet with authorities in person. The Oregon County Prosecutors’ Office is seeking charges for stealing over twenty-five thousand dollars.
