
The St. Louis Cardinals powered their way to a 9-7 win over the San Diego Padres Thursday night at Busch Stadium, fueled by an explosive second inning and clutch pitching down the stretch. After falling behind early, the Cardinals responded with a 6-run second inning highlighted by three-run homers from Wilson Contreras and Brendan Donovan. The back-to-back blast gave St. Louis a lead they would never lose, despite a late push from San Diego. Cardinals starter Sonny Gray improved to 10 and 4 on the season, going five innings and limiting the Padres to three earned runs. The Cardinals will meet with the Padres again tonight for game 2 of a 4-game series at Busch Stadium, righty Miles Mikolas will get the start. The Cardinals come into the series with a record of 53-51.
