The Kansas City Royals made a trade just ahead of Thursday’s deadline, sending backup catcher Freddy Fermin to the San Diego Padres. In return, the Royals received right-handed pitcher Ryan Bergert and Stephen Kolek. The deal was confirmed at 2:46 p.m., just before the 5 p.m. deadline. Bergert, a rookie, has a 1-0 record with a 2.78 ERA in 11 appearances this season and could help fill holes in the Royals’ injury-plagued rotation. Kolek, also a right-hander, is 4-5 with a 4.18 ERA in 14 starts for San Diego this year. Fermin, a 30-year-old, was in his fourth season with Kansas City and was praised for his defensive contributions. He played a key role alongside Salvador Perez in limiting stolen bases – the Royals currently allow the fewest in the league. Offensively, Fermin was batting .255 with 3 home runs, 12 RBIs, and a .309 on-base percentage. The Royals wished him well as he joined the Padres in the National League West and entered the playoff race.
