Cards win and Royals lose Friday night

The St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Chicago Cubs 5–0 Friday night at Busch Stadium, riding a dominant start from Michael McGreevy and timely hitting to open their weekend series on a high note. McGreevy tossed six shutout innings, allowing just one walk while scattering seven hits. Offensively, Jordan Walker drove in the game’s first run with a single in the second inning and later added a solo home run. Iván Herrera delivered a sacrifice fly, while Willson Contreras and Pedro Pagés each contributed RBI singles to pad the lead. In total, the Cardinals racked up 13 hits against Chicago pitching. The series will take a special turn tonight as Yadier Molina returns to the Cardinals as a guest coach under manager Oli Marmol. The former All-Star catcher, who retired in 2022, will be in uniform for the first time since his playing days, taking part in the dugout for the night game against the Cubs. On the mound, Miles Mikolas (6–9, 4.32 ERA) is set to start for St. Louis, opposing Chicago right-hander Javier Assad (7–8, 3.95 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. at Busch Stadium.

The Kansas City Royals were unable to capitalize on an energetic start as the Minnesota Twins rolled to a commanding 9–4 victory at Target Field. Mike Yastrzemski electrified the home crowd with a 109.3 mph, 418-foot leadoff homer, but that spark was short-lived. Seth Lugo endured a night to forget, lasting just four innings, giving up seven earned runs, matching his worst start since August 2024.  Despite a late surge featuring a 456‑foot blast from Bobby Witt Jr. and a run-scoring double by Kyle Isbel, the Royals couldn’t stem the offensive tide. Defensive miscues and a potent Twins lineup sealed the Royals’ fate.  Looking ahead, Kansas City turns to left-hander Noah Cameron, who carries a 5–5 record and a 2.68 ERA, to start Game 2 of the series today. He’ll square off against Minnesota’s righty Bailey Ober (4–6, 5.38 ERA) in what should be a much tighter pitching duel.
