The Willow Springs R-IV School District is facing serious financial challenges, prompting officials to warn of upcoming budget cuts and likely staff reductions. A recent audit of the 2024 fiscal year revealed a net decrease in funds of more than $1.2 million and a six percent drop in the district’s unrestricted fund balance. Earlier this year, the board approved a revised audit after reallocating federal COVID relief funds, temporarily raising the unrestricted balance to 19%. As of this week, that figure is projected to fall to about five percent, only slightly above the state-required minimum of three percent. Superintendent Spence cited declining enrollment as a key factor in reduced revenue, noting that Missouri’s school funding formula is partly based on student numbers. Specific funding shortfalls were not detailed.
