ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Top Rays prospect Carson Williams made an electrifying MLB debut, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a towering two-run, 410-foot home run in the eighth inning to lift the Tampa Bay Rays over the St. Louis Cardinals 10–6 on Friday night. Williams’ shot came right after the Cards rallied to cut a 7–1 deficit to 7–6, ending the Rays’ four-game skid. Jake Mangum led Tampa’s massive 16-hit attack with 4-for-5, two doubles, two RBIs, and a stolen base, while Josh Lowe, Brandon Lowe, Tristan Gray, and Junior Caminero all homered. Rays starter Adrian Houser impressed in his home debut over 6 innings, allowing four runs. Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas struggled, yielding five runs on ten hits in just 2 and a half innings. Notably, Willson Contreras and Nathan Church each homered and collected two hits apiece for St. Louis, but it wasn’t enough. The Cardinals stay in Tampa Bay for game two—likely facing another tough outing unless their arms and bats rebound.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the Royals 7–5 on Friday night in a comeback fueled by Zach McKinstry’s three-hit night, including a homer, triple, and two runs scored. Kansas City had held a 3–1 lead into the sixth, thanks to Vinnie Pasquantino’s contribution, which included extending his team-record streak to five straight games with a homer. But Detroit tied it with a solo shot from Riley Greene in the sixth, and then went ahead in the seventh on a flurry: McKinstry started with an infield single, and later Randal Grichuk misplayed a throw, setting up additional runs from Andy Ibáñez and Gleyber Torres. Kyle Finnegan earned the win with two shutout innings of relief; Bailey Falter took the loss. Kansas City will send RHP Michael Wacha to the mound to face Detroit’s Chris Paddack in game two of the series.
