Michael K. O’Neail, of De Soto, pleaded guilty Sept. 3 to illegally killing and abandoning the elk. A judge ordered O’Neail to pay a $10,000 fine and sentenced him to 60 days in jail, but suspended the jail term on the condition that he complete two years of probation and pay the fine within one year.

Two other men, Kevin B. Click and Travis R. Wadlow, both of Bonne Terre, were fined $500 plus court costs and ordered to contribute $750 to the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation for illegally taking or possessing white-tailed deer. They were not directly responsible for the elk’s death, officials said.
